Care in Action
With a career at the TAC, you’ll be helping us look out for the lives of everyone who travels on Victoria’s roads. That’s care in action.
Find out more about our shared purpose, and what drives every one of us.
Right now, we’re seeking a General Counsel who will play their part in this shared purpose, while also supporting the progress of clients and colleagues so they can achieve great things. That’s truly rewarding work that will help us continue to deliver life-critical services where it matters.
About the role
The General Counsel is a key leader at the TAC, responsible for overseeing the Corporate Legal, Enterprise Contract Management, and Enterprise Governance and Compliance functions. This role ensures the TAC meets its legal and compliance obligations while supporting the delivery of its strategic priorities.
More than just a legal expert, the General Counsel brings a high level of business acumen and is skilled at managing legal risk in a practical and solutions-focused way. You'll be a strategic thinker who can offer clear, commercially sound advice and actionable options, bridging the gap between legal integrity and the needs of a dynamic business environment.
As a hands-on leader, you will guide a complex, multidisciplinary team while actively contributing to key legal work. You will be a trusted partner across the business, known for your ability to engage stakeholders warmly, build relationships, and influence outcomes.
About the Team
This newly created General Counsel role sits within the Corporate Legal and Compliance. Branch of the Finance & Governance division, which is committed to ensuring the TAC is financially sustainable, efficient, and governed effectively.
You will lead a team of six direct reports overseeing a broader group of 15–20 staff, including strong leaders who are well-connected to their teams. This role requires a hands-on General Counsel, someone who is not only strategic but ready to step in, manage workloads, and support the team with day-to-day legal and governance work when needed.
With the addition of two new functions, Enterprise Governance and Compliance, and Enterprise Contract Management, you will be instrumental in building, resourcing, and shaping these areas to ensure they are structured for long-term success and embedded effectively into the wider business.
What we’re looking for
Supportive and Strategic Leader
You are an experienced leader with strong people management skills and a proven ability to develop, support, and lead a high-performing legal team in a complex environment. You thrive in balancing strategic leadership with hands-on support.
Experienced Legal Professional
You hold tertiary qualifications in Law, a current Victorian Practising Certificate, and admission as an Australian Lawyer. With extensive experience in providing high-level legal advice across corporate and commercial law, you are confident navigating complex legal matters. You bring strong knowledge of legislative compliance, governance frameworks, and reporting obligations. Experience in government or a government-facing role will be highly regarded.
Trusted Stakeholder Partner
You are collaborative and skilled in building strong, productive relationships across all levels of an organisation. You have well developed influencing and coaching abilities and experience embedding a culture of governance and compliance whilst ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.
Why you’ll love it here
There’s more to work than a competitive salary and amazing employee benefits. As our newest General Counsel, you’ll also:
Make a positive difference
Every day the work you do at the TAC contributes to something bigger. As part of an inclusive, supportive team you’ll find real purpose in achieving goals, together.
Be rewarded for great work
We value our people, offering salary packaging and a reward and recognition program.
Grow and go places
We’re invested in your progress. When you work for one of Victoria’s largest and leading workplaces, you’ll receive extensive internal opportunities for development and access to the LinkedIn Learning Digital Hub.
