Care in Action
With a career at the TAC, you’ll be helping us look out for the lives of everyone who travels on Victoria’s roads. That’s care in action.
Find out more about our shared purpose, and what drives every one of us.
Right now, we’re seeking a Principal Solicitor who will play their part in the shared purpose. Someone with the right skills and expertise, as well as attitude and openness to new ideas, that help advance positive outcomes for the organisations, their colleagues, and themselves.
About the role
The Principal Solicitor provides high‑quality, strategic legal advice across a broad range of corporate and commercial matters, leading the management of TAC’s most complex and high‑risk corporate legal matters. The role oversees a team of solicitors, including workload allocation, capability development, and knowledge management, to ensure consistent, efficient and client‑centred service delivery.
It also drives organisational legal risk management, contributes to governance and decision‑making, and builds strong, trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support TAC’s strategic priorities. As a senior technical specialist and people leader, the Principal Solicitor develops and mentors solicitors, uplifts legal practice capability, and leads the continuous improvement and streamlining of legal systems, processes and operational frameworks.
About the Team
This role sits within the Corporate Legal, Enterprise Compliance & Governance branch, within our Finance & Governance division, an area committed to ensuring TAC’s financial stability, corporate legal function and effective governance.
You will be leading a high functioning supportive team of solicitors who work collaboratively to deliver clear, practical and client‑centred legal services.
You will report to the General Counsel, a strong, strategic active leader who will support you in achieving goals and deliverables.
What we’re looking for
Senior Commercial Legal Expertise
Bring at least 10+ years of post‑admission experience a corporate lawyer advising on corporate and commercial matters in a common law jurisdiction. Applies deep technical judgment to high‑risk, strategically significant matters and provides clear, rational and solutions-focused advice.
Strategic Leadership, Development and Operations
Lead and develop a team of solicitors, enabling a high‑performing, collaborative and client‑centred culture. Oversees workload allocation, workflow management and quality standards, while uplifting capability through mentoring, coaching and structured legal development. Strengthening legal operations by streamlining processes, embedding consistent practice standards, and driving continuous improvement across systems and procedures.
Organisational Risk, Governance and Stakeholder Influence
Provides reliable, easy to understand advice on legal risk to support strong decision‑making. Builds positive relationships across TAC and with external partners, negotiates agreements effectively, and prepares high‑quality briefings for senior leaders. Acts with professionalism and integrity, supports governance frameworks, and leads community as well as pro-bono initiatives that contribute to access to justice.
Why you’ll love it here
There’s more to work than a competitive salary and amazing employee benefits. As our newest Principal Solicitor, you’ll also:

Every day the work you do at the TAC contributes to something bigger. As part of an inclusive, supportive team you’ll find real purpose in achieving goals, together.
